“ Reports from Barbizon staffers about the latest products and releases featured at the LDI 2016 Show held October 21-23, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada. ”
Airstar, a leading provider of inflatable structures and lighting balloons for the event industry, announced the enhancement of its successful Crystal range with the launch of two brand new innovative products – Sunshade and Crystal White 50k lum – at the 2016 LDI Show.
Following a successful pilot test at music festivals in France this summer, Airstar introduces Sunshade to the Crystal range: a large lighting umbrella which transforms the Crystal lighting balloon technology into a new envelope shape. Measuring 2.2 or 2.6 meters in diameter, it features the same RGB LED lights that can be found on the Crystal balloons and is DMX controllable.
In addition to Sunshade, Airstar introduced the Crystal White 50k lumen lighting balloons (available in 130cm, 160cm, and 200cm diameter), which feature innovative LED lamps enabling eight times less power consumption versus halogen technology for the same luminous intensity. In addition, the LED lamps boast a lifetime of 50,000 hours vs 300 hours for halogen.
Crystal White 50k lum is also dimmable, with options including cold white, warm white or daylight that is fully DMX controllable. The Crystal White features an extremely quiet fan to cool the LED engine and is flicker free (tested up to 150 frames per second) making it suitable for use at broadcast events
The Sunshade is currently shipping while the Crystal White 50k lumens will be available worldwide on 7th November 2016.
Altman – This year’s Altman booth was built around their core LED products.
Spectra Cycs and Chalice units provided wash and down light accents. New to the booth this year were a few notable products which include the Altman PHX1 150w, the Pegasus, and the recently released Gallery series fixtures.
The Altman PHX1 150w is the convection cooled version of the PHX2 250w. For those environments where fan noise is a deal breaker, the PHX1 150w solves this issue. The unit is available in all the same configurations as the PHX2 (RGBA, RGBW, 3k, 5k, 3k/5k variable) and with the same options for 5, 10, 19, 26, 36 and 50 degree barrels. The light output is comparable to slightly less than a HPL575 source.
Speaking of the HPL lamp, did you know you can convert many of your older Altman fixtures including the 65Q to an HPL source? If you have Altman fixtures that you would like to change over to HPL lamps, contact your Barbizon sales person to check if there is a retrofit kit available for your fixture.
For those who missed the Pegasus Fresnel last year, it was on display again this year. The Pegasus is a truly versatile fixture with its 15-85 degree zoom and ability to function as either a mains dim or DMX dim unit. The Pegasus is available in 2700k, 3000k, 4000k and 5000k. The 6” and 8” will take the standard 6” and 8” Fresnel accessories including barn doors and top hats that may already be in your stock.
Finally, the newest fixture to the booth was the new Gallery series. Available in a profile, beam wash or flood option and the standard variations of color temperatures. The profile units come in either a 15-35 degree or 25-50 degree zoom. The Gallery series provides a sleeker looking fixture for those museum or upscale architectural projects. Dimming options include mains dim, DMX/RDM, 0-10v or DALI. The Gallery series can be used along with Altman’s Smart Track or in a portable, pendant or surface mount set up.
Taking center stage on ADJ’s 2016 LDI booth was the new Vizi BSW 300, an incredibly potent LED-powered hybrid moving head fixture that generates beam, spot and wash effects all from a single fixture. Offering incredible output, thanks to its immense 300W LED engine, the unit boasts a host of advanced features including two 6-facet prisms (one circular and one linear), two GOBO wheels (one with replaceable rotating GOBOs and the other with fixed static patterns) and two indexed color wheels.
Following the phenomenal success of ADJ’s first LED video panel, the AV6 – which made such a product affordable for many venues and smaller production companies for the very first time – ADJ will use LDI to launch a brand new video product, the AV3. Offering a denser pixel pitch of 3.91mm (compared to 6mm on the AV6), this new LED video panel inherits many of the popular traits of the AV6 but allows a shorter effective viewing distance. Offering impressive brightness of 1000 NITs and a wide viewing angle of 120-degrees, both horizontally and vertically, the AV3 is sure to prove popular for both fixed and temporary installations
With over 30 years in business, American Grip has constantly strived to deliver better studio & grip products. “It is the little details that sets us apart,” said owner Lance Alan Snoke. New products to them this year are a nifty “Telescoping Baby Riser” and a “compacted version of a 1.25” or 1.5” pipe spreader”, both of which are designed to save space and not take up as much room. Remember if you need a more customized solution give them a call. Their team probably can come up with a solution for you!
Apollo introduced the AVERE 4 UV black light, this compact unit outputs light at 365nm wavelength, is dimmable to 0% using ELV dimming and is IP65 rated for outdoor use. It is fanless for noise free operation using 6 UV emitters available in 15, 22 and 35 degree beam spreads.
Arri's SkyPanel is a compact, ultra-bright and high-quality LED soft light that sets a new standard for the industry. With a design focused on form, color, beam field and output, this fixture has gained popularity in content creation from the web all the way to major motion pictures.
New to LDI was the release of the SkyPanel S120-C. The S120 is twice as long as the S60, but weighs nearly the same. Its larger light aperture makes a great soft light even better. Retaining the same features and color tunability as its smaller counterparts, the S120 consumes less than 400 watts, yet it is slightly brighter than the S60-C and has an outstanding efficacy of 90 lumens per watt.
Avo's new Ai Version 10 for their flagship Infinity media server was on display and boasts an array of all new visual effects allowing video designers to directly apply the same vibrantly colorful and dynamic treatments onto their own live camera inputs.
A further new feature of Ai v10 is BPM Sync, born from developing the custom integrated control system for the lighting and visuals at JEWEL Nightclub. The in-house Avolites consoles trigger effects in perfect synchronization with the beat - a feature commissioned by Hakkasan's Director of Video Production Ed Shaw and Vice President of Entertainment James Algate. BPM sync allows users to assign a number of beats to a video clip to create their own immersive audiovisual experience.
The software update will also offer a new projection mapping tool, MeshWarp - a combination of Projective Keystone and Grid Warp - which will enable users to quickly warp their content to match the projection surface. This in addition to automap and auto blend puts a powerful array of mapping tools in the hands of every user. Timeline is a major addition for Ai v10, providing precise control of video in a timecode environment, whilst still allowing live control simultaneously.
Also being shown were the powerful features of the Titan v10 software upgrade that is now available to download for free onto all consoles from the Tiger Touch Pro (inclusive) onwards. Some older consoles may be compatible with v10 if an upgrade kit is fitted; if you are unsure please contact Barbizon or Avolites. Titan v10 is the result of a year of research and development by a dedicated team of Avolites developers, enhancing the best-loved features of Titan v9 and introducing a wealth of new ones. Many of the new features have been created in response to user and industry feedback.

Titan v10 also allows the user to view intensity values in one place via the Intensity Grid. This clearly shows levels, source of information, whether increasing or decreasing and tracking information. Also added the set legend Halo, which allows the user to add color borders around fixtures and groups, enabling view fixtures much more easily within the console screen. You can also easily identify which group they belong to.
Another feature is Freeform Workspaces - no longer restricted to just four workspaces per screen, pick any position and size for your windows in seconds and store them to your workspaces for quick access to the information you need.
Titan v10 now offers a very useful UNDO feature, offering a 20 step back history, in addition to a new REDO history, too. Allowing you to massively speed up programming, the user can undo almost any action on the console including delete, merge, move and loads more. View history in the new undo window, and click any point to undo back to that action.
There are also extra directions including random for the hugely popular Key Frame Shapes feature, offering many more looks. Key Frame Shapes allows you to create spectacular effects from scratch. Using palettes or the programmer to define the frames, and powerful tools such as transition curves, phase and spatial direction, it is possible to create radically different looks for each channel in seconds.
And Avolites' Pixel Mapper gets even more powerful with the new Motion Blur effect, which creates trails that follow the element. Users can also now use the faders in Live Shape Editing, to alter the shape with incredible ease.
Titan v10 includes the much-used Multi-User Networking feature, allowing you to connect multiple consoles together to work collaboratively on the same show. A show can have multiple users, each with their own User Settings, Handle Worlds and Selected Key Profiles. When set to Multi-User, consoles can also still be used as backups.
Morpheus the exclusive US distributor of Ayrton products revved up their digital lighting portfolio with number of additions.
MAGICPANEL-FX is an exciting new multi-function luminaire with a front face comprised of a 5x5 array of squared lenses designed to create 2D and 3D effects. A 15:1 optical zoom system with no visible external moving parts creates variable beam angles from 3.5° to 52°. These zoom optics are capable of projecting everything from tight shafts of light to a wide wash, and produce a solid beam of light that “squares off” as it separates into a stunning patchwork of colors. This flexible unit can be used for pixel mapping, as a powerful special effects projector, and as a wash light.
MAGICBURST Ayrton’s spinning 240,000 lumen strobe is the industry’s first high-power graphic LED strobe with continuous, unlimited rotation on both pan and tilt axes. The 15”x15” face supports 3,840 high-output white LEDs grouped into 64 pixels in an 8 x 8 matrix. The strobe duration, speed and intensity of each 60-LED pixel can be individually controlled to create brilliant and breathtaking stroboscopic effects and graphic arrays. A library of fixed images and pre-programmed dynamic effects are accessible from fixture memory. With a new, state-of-the-art ultra-compact, 1,300-watt power supply, MagicBurst delivers peak light output of over 240,000 lumens – perfectly calibrated at 5600K - for a duration of several seconds.
